Common Sprinkler System Issues and How to Spot Them

Having a sprinkler system is a great peace of mind for many homes and businesses. Not only does it ensure a beautiful landscape that’s properly watered throughout the summer months, it also absolves you of having to manually get out there and get the job done yourself! With the proper installation, setup, watering plan and more, your sprinkler system will serve you diligently.

Unfortunately, like any system that involves electrical, mechanical and plumbing components, there’s a lot that could end up going wrong when it comes to your sprinkler system—especially if you’re not always so diligent in keeping up with sprinkler system service in Burlington County, NJ. Let’s take a look at some of the problems—big and small—you might encounter with your sprinklers system this season and what they usually tend to indicate:

  • Low water pressure: If your sprinklers kick on but they’re not putting out the GPM they should be or there’s a visible hindrance to the power of the water being spread, it’s a good chance that you have a low water pressure issue. This can be caused by a few things—such as a broken seal or a damaged flow rate valve—however the most common issue is usually a damaged line that’s hemorrhaging air somewhere.
  • No water or spurting water: If your sprinkler head is spitting out water, but it’s coming at a staggered pace or in spurts, you’re probably dealing with a damaged solenoid. The solenoid is responsible for opening and closing depending on whether or not the system is turned on or off—if it’s stuck in the middle it’s going to create spurts, as the water will only be flowing through a portion of the open solenoid. If you’re not getting any water at all, it could be that the solenoid is completely stuck in the closed position.
  • Inconsistent spray pattern: If your sprinkler has gone rogue and is spraying in inconsistent patterns, it’s likely an issue with the nozzle. Debris can sometimes become lodged in the nozzle due to weathering or retraction, if your sprinkler nests into the ground. This is generally an easy enough fix: your sprinkler heads can be removed and cleaned to provide a clear spray path.
  • Excessive water pressure: On the other end of the water pressure spectrum, excessive pressure can result in some interesting issues! Misting is a clear sign of excessive pressure, as water is being forced out at a very high GPM rate. Most times, flow control valves will correct this, however in some cases a pressure regulator sensor might have to be installed.

It’s important to pay attention to the function of your sprinkler system to ensure it’s doing the best job it can at all times. If you notice any of the issues above or start to suspect it might not be performing to a high level, make sure you’re seeking sprinkler system service in Burlington County, NJ right away. Inefficiency is sure to cost you more the longer it goes unresolved.
